Latest Update 16th July 2008:
Wordpress 2.6 Is Now Released!

Here’s a little video on the new amazing features available:

Latest Update:20th July 2008

Upgrading Wordpress used to be a 3 hour pain for me.  Fortunately, you can do so with this amazing plugin I’ve discovered - Wordpress Automatic Upgrade.

Using this plugin, I’ve managed to complete the full upgrade (backup+installation) today, from 2.5.1 to 2.6 in under 5 minutes!  That’s a whopping 97% time saving (not to mention mental stress too)!

I’ve tested it on a mockup installing on my home machine before giving the green light to go ahead with my blog.

Based on my own success, I highly recommend this plugin if you want to save some time.

Caveat: Please be sure to make adequate backups before using this plugin (although it can do decent backups for you as well)

Dear Wordpress Comrades,

If you’ve been searching for ways to spice up your Wordpress installation, learn a few tricks and amaze your visitors, then you’ve landed onto the right place!

Hundreds of thousands of people uses Wordpress CMS daily and it’s not difficult to see massive amount of support for the blogging platform. The series of pages over here aims to share what I have personally learn about the software and how you can benefit the many tricks and tips that I have quietly disclosed.

Many bloggers attempt to keep their blogging secrets in their pockets, and that is not the way to massively expand an open-source community.

On the other hand, I have to agree that certain propiertary technologies and scripts should not be shared, or at least to be paid for before you can take advantage of that. This includes certain themes and plugins that are developed for commercial purposes.

Here in Wordpress Hacks, I’ll attempt to chart as many open-sourced scripts, plugins and techniques as possible and keeping the paid ones to the minimum.

On the right hand side, I’ve included a table of contents with links to static pages for topics on various Wordpress Hacks that I’ve discovered.

These hacks should work for most people. If in case they are not working for you, kindly drop your questions or comments related to in that topic. Hopefully, through the power of the open community, someone can point you to the desirable answers.

Thanks a lot for dropping by and happy Wordpress hacking!

Note: We are still in the process of adjusting the content for the topics in these pages. Thanks for your patience and do keep checking back!

Weblog Tools Collection: What Does the Blurb on Top of Plugins Link Mean?
by Keith Dsouza
16 Aug 2008 at 2:07pm

If  you are using WordPress 2.6 and above you may have noticed a blurb above the plugins link with a number, many users are confused about this and have asked me about it, here is a simple explanation to all WordPress users who are confused about the blurb.

The blurb on top of the plugins link indicates the number of plugins for which updates are available, making it easier for users to track updates without having to frequently visit the plugins page. You may not notice the blurb if the plu...

WordCamp Utah is coming!

September 27th is the date - registration is open.

I’m quite looking forward to this (particularly since I wasn’t able to make WordCamp SF this weekend), both as a speaker and as an attendee. I’ll probably be flying in Friday mid-day and out on Sunday.

Big thanks to Joseph Scott for organizing.

My company, Crowd Favorite, is proud to be one of the sponsors of the event.

Weblog Tools Collection: WP Plugin: “Where did they go from here” Updated
by Mark Ghosh
15 Aug 2008 at 11:05am

I have updated my Where did they go from here Plugin to make it compatible with WordPress 2.6 and beyond. The plugin adds the small list of links to the bottom of each post, as on this blog, of places within your blog that visitors went to after visiting a particular post. This emulates an Amazon functionality of similar nature. Download version 1.4 from here.

Weblog Tools Collection: Maintenance Update: WordPress 2.6.1 Released
by Keith Dsouza
15 Aug 2008 at 12:30am

The WordPress team has released a maintenance update to the WordPress 2.6 branch. This release includes several improvements for international users, it also fixes permalink problems faced by blogs hosted on IIS servers.

This release does not require a mandatory update, so you can continue using WordPress 2.6 if you are happy with it, although you may want to upgrade to this release if you have been facing any of the bugs that were fixed in this version.

2.6.1 is out.  Thanks for testing.  The beta releases had very good download numbers, and the helpful responses in the comments and on the bug tracker were great.

Dev Blog: WordPress 2.6.1
by Ryan
15 Aug 2008 at 12:00am

With 2.6.1, we’re continuing our trend of releasing a maintenance release shortly after a major release in order to get fixes for the inevitable “dot zero” bugs into your hands without a long wait.  If you’re happy with 2.6, however, keep on using it.  You need not upgrade to 2.6.1 if 2.6 is getting the job done.

2.6.1 offers several improvements for international users.  Styling of the admin for right-to-left languages is much improved thanks to the efforts of the Farsi and Hebrew translatio...
