What Matters To You and I Most: Inspirational And Tranquil Messages

March 21st, 2008 by Wai Loong (3 Comments)

It has been a struggle for me last week and even till now. Of course, you wouldn’t know what I’m talking about because you’re not my closest relatives and friends. Still, I invite you to be a part of my world I’m creating, every day and every moment.

I’m talking about love, disease, death and life as a whole.

All of us have to die one day – and that’s a certainty in life. No doubt that you and I will perish from this very little planet one day, but are you prepared for that day? Are you constantly reflecting on that everyday while you go about your daily rat race of financial struggles?

Is your life completely consumed by your job(s), work or anything related that enable you to accumulate more of that strange, but powerful worldly vehicle you and I came to know it as money?

Perhaps, you may feel that day is too distant and far away, and you don’t consider it any significant – yet. Have you ever consider that even for your closest family members?

I know that’s difficult to imagine… and highly unimaginable.

Maybe you’re more likely to recall the last time when you were struck down by an illness? And you feel like you’re going to die in your bed all night? Did you yearn for that first sun ray from the windows of your bedroom, that took forever to appear as you struggled in your bed unable to sleep as you’re fighting against a dreadful illness?

What was your first reaction when you felt a lot better after taking pain relief drugs or alternative medicine? Were you feeling really grateful to the inventor or discoverer of the drug or medicine?

I hate to take pain killers and flu reliever. And believe me – it’s been almost 4 years since I last took one in spite of the pain and path I took to allow my body to recover from minor illnesses such as flu and fever.

Long story short, I was forced to plunge down one last week… and because if I don’t, I won’t be able to get up to handle an important assignment – what you may have understand as job. That’s scary, if you can relate to how I felt.

I was ever grateful and indebted to that little one pill that changed how I felt for the rest of the night, until dawn came around. Can you imagine how I felt to find that almost expired Panadol pill? That it relieved me of a nightmare filled sleep and pulled me through till dawn?

Lesson learnt – Always have effective and unexpired Panadol pills or any other form of medication aids handy at all times. You’ll most likely need one when you least expect it and boy will you be glad to listen to my advice one day…

Similarly, you can fully imagine the relief I had when my father who was diagnosed with mild stroke, rushed in and hospitalized, and pulled through 3 days intensive care taken by the staffs of CGH (Changi General Hospital, Singapore). Was I grateful to all staffs who supported that over just another mundane weekend when everybody else are enjoying their weekends in shopping malls?

What I’m trying to point you to:

“Are you ever grateful to all matters around you?”

To you ever feel grateful to the beauty of life, the people closest to you and the good things you own?

I understand fully that most people are hit hard by the latest inflation of major economies and the weakening of the US economy. With that, it is likely to bring along the kind of stress folks are likely to face, such as job cuts and competition from emerging economies such as Asia, Russia, Latin America and Eastern Europe.

That asides, I’d like you to seriously consider this…

And that is…

What matters most to you?

Will it be money or life?

Or are there anything else you crave for?

Perhaps you should seriously grab and read this amazing book from your local library or book store. It’s entitled, “What Matters Most: The Power of Living Your Values” by Hyrum W. Smith. I came across this impressive book a couple of years ago and till today, I still keep a copy of it on my bookshelf.

Just yesterday, I came across a very touching and impactful email which I guess I’ve seen before (probably a couple of years back?).

For your benefit, I’ve quoted (duplicated) the full story with some very minor modifications. Please take a little bit of time to sink in and appreciate the gratefulness I’m talking about so far.

My husband is an engineer by profession. I love him for his steady nature and I love the warm feeling when I lean against his broad shoulders.

Two years of courtship and now, five years into marriage, I would have to admit, that I am getting tired of it. The reasons of me loving him before, has now transformed into the cause of all my restlessness.

I am a sentimental woman and extremely sensitive when it comes to a relationship and my feelings. I yearn for the romantic moments, like a little girl yearning for candy.

My husband is my complete opposite; his lack of sensitivity, and the inability of bringing romantic moments into our marriage has disheartened me about LOVE.

One day, I finally decided to tell him my decision, that I wanted a divorce.

“Why?” he asked, shocked.

“I am tired. There are no reasons for everything in the world!” I answered.

He kept silent the whole night, seemingly in deep thought. My feeling of disappointment only increased.

Here was a man who was not able to even express his predicament, so what else could I expect from him?

And finally he asked me: “What can I do to change your mind?”

Somebody said it right… It’s hard to change a person’s personality, and I guess, I have started losing faith in him.

Looking deep into his eyes I slowly answered:
“Here is the question…. If you can answer and convince my heart, I will change my mind. Let’s say I want a flower located on the face of a mountain cliff, and we both are sure that picking the flower will cause your death. Will you do it for me?”

He said: “I will give you your answer tomorrow…. ”
My hopes just sank by listening to his response.

I woke up the next morning to find him gone, and saw a piece of paper with his scratchy handwriting underneath a milk glass, on the dining table near the front door, that goes….

My dear, “I would not pick that flower for you, but …. please allow me to explain the reasons further….. ”

This first line was already breaking my heart. I continued reading…

“When you use the computer you always mess up the Software programs, and you cry in front of the screen. I have to save my fingers so that I can help to restore the programs.
You always leave the house keys behind, thus I have to save my legs to rush home to open the door for you. You love travelling but always lose your way in a new city. I have to save my eyes to show you the way.
You always have the cramps whenever your “good friend” approaches every month. I have to save my palms so that I can calm the cramps in your tummy.
You like to stay indoors, and I worry that you will be infected by infantile autism. I have to save my mouth to tell you jokes and stories to cure your boredom.
You always stare at the computer, and that will do nothing good for your eyes. I have to save my eyes so that when we grow old, I can help to clip your nails and help to remove those annoying white hairs.

So I can also hold your hand while strolling down the beach, as you enjoy the sunshine and the beautiful sand…and tell you the colour of flowers, just like the colour of the glow on your young face…

Thus, my dear, unless I am sure that there is someone who loves you more than I do… I could not pick that flower yet, and die … ”

My tears fell on the letter, and blurred the ink of his handwriting … and as I continue reading… “Now, that you have finished reading my answer, and if you are satisfied, please open the front door for I am standing outside bringing your favourite bread and fresh milk…”

I rushed to pull open the door, and saw his anxious face, clutching tightly with his hands, the milk bottle and loaf of bread….

Now I am very sure that no one will ever love me as much as he does, and I have decided to leave the flower alone…

That’s LIFE, and LOVE.

When one is surrounded by love, the feeling of excitement fades away, and one tends to ignore the true love that lies in between the peace and dullness.

Love shows up in all forms; even in very small and cheeky forms. It has never been a model. It could be the dullest and most boring form ….

Flowers, and romantic moments are only used and appear on the surface of the relationship. Under all this, the pillar of true love stands …

The happiest people in the world… are not those who have no problems, but those who learn to live with things that are less than perfect.

LOVE is not just between two lovers, husband and wife–it also encompasses mother, father and siblings, sisters and brothers, friends and neighbours!

Until I think of you again with the next warm life touching story… it’s better to lose your pride to the one you love, than to lose the one you love because of pride.

Maybe you’re all too busy building up your career for the last couple of years.

Along the way, it’s very likely that you’ve gotten yourself entrenched in the rat race of working and working for that kind of lifestyle and entertainment that you think that can satisfy your desires and kama (Sanskrit word for sensual pleasure). Increasingly, the escalating cost of lifestyle and cost of living may have forced you and I into this endless financial struggle. But have you ever pause for a while, and re-look at what’s actually happening around you? And what I mean by happening, is those little things around yourself, your family and your friends?

Are they trying to get your attention but you choose to ignore or pretend not to know?

How long will they (and you) be around before the final moments?

Do you ever think you and I could have done it better, to make the time for them, even for a minute everyday? How about a second-life? If it is all too late for you now, as you’re reading this, what would you have done or not done if you were to live again, or better still, be given a second chance?

As I’m pondering over such issues over the past few days, I caught a glimpse of the latest documentary show, “Silent Scream” on ChannelU (MediaCorp).

Silent Scream (????, Local Info-Ed ??????) is a 6-episode series that takes a daring outlook on critical social issues that many experience but do not openly discuss. Topics include how terminally ill patients face death, family violence, suicide, abandonment, divorce and dealing with intellectually challenged family members.

I wasn’t paying much attention to the documentary while busy preparing this writeup when I noticed a very touching interview of a hospice patient. As you’ve probably already know, hospice hospital is where terminally ill patients are relocated to receive proper health care before departure to the darkness.

I caught the interview of a journalist with an engineer-turned full time volunteer to support terminal patients. He said in one of his statements, “The hospital is a last place of dignity given to these group of friends (he regard all patients as his old friends). ” It’s a place for miracle if it ever happens, but patients eventually die in 3 to 6 months timeframe. He felt it like loosing an old friend. It was very touching indeed!

The story of the interviewed patient was extremely touching. I grabbed my new camera and managed to capture a few shots of the interview from the television.

The patient had a young wife with 2 teenage daughters. The family had to struggle to accept the truth of emerging death and even have to face the choice of creating his will and photography. Despite his illness, his wife and elderly mother supported him fully in his battle with the deadly disease.

A surprising feat to prolong his remaining days came about from reciting prayers and reading the bible, and keeping himself distracted from his terminal conditions by enjoying meaningful time with his mother, wife and eldest daughter.

Inevitably, he passed away in about 3 months after the interview.

It’s that moment of truth that woke me up about how fragile life can be.

No matter what you’re upset about now, even if you hit some impossible challenges in your life right now…

I want you to remember that your situation is nothing compared to the termination of life our brothers and sisters who may be suffering in a distant hospice… awaiting moment of sunset…

My apologies for my disturbed writing style in this post…

Could it have been affected by the recent happenings around my world?

Did I affect your mood?

I’m really sorry if it did, but I don’t know if there’s any other methods I can use to spread the message and how I felt over the week. I trust that you can empathize with me for a while? And thanks if you did!

Before I call it off for now, I’ve got 2 songs here that I’ve felt may be suitable for me to dedicate them to you and your loved ones. May you be blessed, grateful and joyous, every moment of your life!

Thanks for listening thus far. Do feel free to drop me a comment below.

And remember:
Live a life with passion!

Boyzone – No Matter What
(YouTube Video)

Chica cha ha ha
Chica cha ha ha
Chica cha ha ha
Chica cha ha ha
Chica cha ha ha
Chica cha ha ha
No matter what they tell us
No matter what they do
No matter what they teach us
What we believe is true

No matter what they call us
However they attack
No matter where they take us
We’ll find our own way back

I can’t deny what I believe
I can’t be what I’m not
I know our love forever
I know, no matter what

If only tears were laughter (ooh)
If only night was day (ooh)
If only prayers were answered (hear my prayers)
Then we would hear God say (say)

No matter what they tell you (ooh)
No matter what they do (ooh)
No matter what they teach you
What we believe is true

And I will keep you safe and strong
And shelter from the storm
No matter where it’s barren
A dream is being born

No matter who they follow
No matter where they lead
No matter how they judge us
I’ll be everyone you need

No matter if the sun don’t shine (sun don’t shine)
Or if the skies are blue (skies are blue)
No matter what the end is
My life began with you

I can’t deny what I believe (what I believe, yeah)
I can’t be what I’m not
(I know, I know) I know this love’s forever
That’s all that matters now
No matter what

No matter what (no, no matter, no)

No, no matter
That’s all that matters to me

Boyzone – Everyday I Love You
(YouTube Video)

I don’t know but I believe
that some things are meant to be
and that you make a better me
everyday I love you

I never thought that dreams came true
but you’ve shown me that they do
you know that I have something new
everyday I love you

Because I believe that destiny
is out of our control (Ooh Don’t you know that)
and you never live until you love
with all your heart and soul

It’s a touch when I feel bad
It’s a smile when I get mad
all the little things I have
everyday I love you

Because I believe that destiny
is out of our control (Ooh Don’t you know that)
and you never live until you love
with all your heart and soul

If I asked would you say Yes
together we’re the very best
I know that I am truely blest
every day I love you

And I’ll give you my best
every day I love you

Oh Yeah..

Hi Wai Loong,

Life is as such…It is a journey whereby everyone experience good and bad. When I am a small boy, I already have thought of all these you wrote. The basic cause is human-being suffer because of desire. We are on here because of our past life.

Hello Bro,

Thanks for sharing similar sentimental and experiences!

Through desires does one crave ambitions. Excess desires is the cause of one’s downfall. The ultimate goal of humanity is to be able to still one’s mind and integrate it with absolute infinity.

When the day comes when we do experience that, we’ll probably understanding the essence of life.

Good reflections!
