The Power of Emotion and Fantasy

The Power of Emotion and Fantasy
By Ng Wai Loong

Do you fantasize?

How often do you do that?

Chances are, most of us do that at least once a day.

Let’s be frank and downright honest. Deep down inside us, we all have a super hero we honor – secretly. ALL of US do fantasize to a certain extend. It’s all about connecting that fantasy to reality. Again, just what is reality. I’m getting confused myself so I better keep the topic back to fantasy.

Sometimes, I fantasize being a superhero, one super bugger (not red underwear wearing outside of course!) that saves my world. Remember that it’s my world? You could have yours but I’ll just keep mine secret.

Hmm… why the topic on emotion and fantasy?

Actually, some life changing decisions are awaiting me now and because I watch so few television these days, I began to recall the good old days when my time is well wasted on fantasy movies.

Hey, don’t get me wrong

I have nothing against watching fantasy movies. In fact, it’s an excellent way to release stress and also helps free up your mind. I’ve been on a strict movie/drama diet these days for personal learning, that’s why.

In the world of fantasy movies, there’s always the hero/heroin, and of course the bad guys/gals. In the typical case, the setting is in the medieval age where the knights, paladins, dragons and phoenixes roam the world.

Xian Jian Qi Xia Zhuan Chinese Paladin

I’m particularly charmed by one drama shown on Channel-U last year. It’s called ????? / ????? / Xian Jian Qi Xia Zhuan, also know to English speaking group as “Chinese Paladin” / The Magic Sword & the Chivalrous Youth / The Sword and the Fairy. It’sa joint Mainland China, Taiwan and Singapore production and was air as early as year 2005 in Taiwan.

The drama series is about a classic medieval legendary swordman (hero), named Li Xiao Yao (???). He started off as a good-for-nothing, a rouge, who goes around teasing girls in his village. He has a good buddy who claimed to have been to Dream Island, where fairies do miracles – even to the extend of reviving the dead!

Xiao Yao’s has an aunt who always whack him and call him a good-for-nothing, one who never resemble his father for him as a respectable hero. He dislike his aunt, but he is lazy and poor – and there is nothing he can do about it. Incidentally, his aunt contracted a strange disease and seemed like no physician in the village could do anything but to ask Xiao Yao to prepare for her funeral.

All of a suddenly, Xiao Yao felt very guilty for his bad relationship with his aunt and is determined to cure her no matter what it cost. After all, his aunt is the only kin he has in the world and he must do something than to see her die.

His close buddy suggested that he should pay a visit to Dream Island to find the magical cure for his aunt’s strange illness. Unfortunately, the direction to this strange land was unclear and the risk of reaching this magical island was unknown.

Undaunted by the difficulties ahead, Xiao Yao heads for Dream Island and the rest is a dream…

Xiao Yao awakens back in his bed, totally forgotten his entire trip to Dream Island – but he has brought back the cure for his aunt. Since then, Xiao Yao was never the same any more from the encounters of the strange magical land.

The story unfolded how he saved the lead actress, Zhao Ling’er (???) from the clutches of the Lunar Sect Cult (and mystic leader, Bai Yue). That is when he met his teacher, another legendary swordsman who forces Xiao Yao as his disciple and ever since, the story set him as a hero, a protector of Ling’er, the heir of Nan Zhao country.

In Dream Island (???), the guardian of Ling’er, grand nanny (??) wanted Xiao Yao to take Ling’er as his wife. This is to ensure that Ling’er is in the hands of the good where Xiao Yao will protect and bring her to find her biological father, the king of Nan Zhao.

Important!
If you don’t see any of the video clips here, it only means it has been taken down by Google or that your web proxy is blocking them (most likely one of the security policies laid down by your company’s IT department).

On his way to Nan Zhao, Xiao Yao challenged a very tough sword lady, Lin Yue Ru (???) in a duel that her father arrange to get her married because she was not getting younger. Needless for me to say, Xiao Yao defeated her among all the other contestants, making her tough to get rid as her father was very determined to marry Yue Ru to Xiao Yao, despite of him been married to Ling’er.

Honestly, I’ve forgotten how he escaped with Ling’er and Yue Ru on the way to Nan Zhao. What I remembered, it is during this time when Yue Ru (she hates him for not marrying her) that she fell in love with Xiao Yao.

She tried to hide her feelings but acted tough for fear of rejection.

Isn’t this very close to reality? 😉

I don’t know if you understand my feel for this drama so I’ve found a number of excellent video clips on YouTube for your viewing.

Here’s the part where Xiao Yao and Ling’er is trying to avoid each other, trying to spite each other in an attempt to avoid getting themselves emotionally hurt. Guess what? The people around them suffered as a result:

Rain of June…

Funny thing is, most of us have very deep childhood memories of rainy days. What are yours? Maybe you can tell me? Mine is simple those of primary school days – ones where I was waiting for my mother to bring me home in the heavy torrent rain.

Waiting for you to change your mind…

Perhaps, is someone which drives you crazy and listen for you just once?

Sounds a bell inside you?

One of the most amazing thing about this drama is the number of sub-themes accompanying it, originally from the computer game of its kind produced by SoftWorld.

Here are the lyrics of this one from the game and drama:

Now, if you can read the lyrics very carefully, it’s specifically written for Yue Ru. Her undying one-sided love for Xiao Yao seems to reflect an old wisdom even till in today’s modern world.

“A movie of 3” but without a name for me.

Have you figured out its significance?

More importantly, what does that means to you?

Oh, and digging further, I’ve found some interesting video clips made by some talented individuals using the songs sang by the famous girl bands, S.H.E and F.I.R.

I wonder how did S.H.E’s song gets into this drama as well but I guess it’s very fitting and the music and drama rocks very well together! I think you’ll enjoy it!

Suo Yao Ta (???, The Demon Locking Tower)

And finally, this one is a very nice and ending theme song when Xiao Yao and Yue Ru braved untold dangers of the demon locking tower in search for the en prisoned Ling’er. A very sad ending with one of them died as a result of the prophecy by Lunar Sect Cult leader, Bai Yue.

The drama ended in tragedy, after so many people were killed in the struggle of understanding if true love ever exist on earth.

Well! I guest that’s a heavy load of bandwidth you’ve taken if you see all the video clips and read my post until here!

In fact, this is one of the longest video blog post I’ve ever written and scripted to date! In fact, it took me more than a few days to completely research and put this together.

I trust that you too will find an amazing amount of fantasy and emotion of your own fantasy story inside you, through the reflections of Xiao Yao and Ling’er, and hopefully, you too will find the inner peace that nested deep inside you.

Have a wonderful day ahead & live life with passion!

Your fantasy clips are so lovely and so moving… There is something about fantasy that is “hyper-true”, truer than true, more real than reality. There is a deeper level of intensity in all of us that can only be revealed through fantasy. Your site is beautiful. Thank you.

Thanks Margaret!

I’m so touched that you are one of us… deep inside, everyone of us is a child. Let not allow others laugh at our childishness, but reflect on the inner peace that was once there, but seems to have gone diluted as we are now grown up.

Do you happen to know a song called “First of May”? I’m particularly charmed by the lyrics – its simplicity.

Maybe I can do some research and put that up in the near future? 😉

Thanks for dropping by and may be peace be with you, always!

Bro,

I do have alot of fantasies. Big ones, small ones, happy ones, sad ones, courageous ones, scary ones, lovey ones, sexy ones… I have very rich imaginations when I am free and have nothing to do. I just let my mind roam. Alot of ideas have been generated during this process. Some do have alot of learning values for me personally. I love to dream.

“Human race is great b’coz we can dream. And the Great Ones are once Dreamers.” – Abrahim Lincoln (translated from a mandrain quote – not sure if the translation is correct but it works fine for me)

Keep dreaming! 🙂

Leroy: Yes! Fantasies, dreams (very similar) are deeply rooted in emotions. They are very powerful tools indeed. They help reaffirms your desires, sometimes driving you crazy between realities.

Fantasies are like storyboards to our dreams. It puts the whole meaningful, under your control.

May your fantasies colorize your life in all forms!

[…] Yeah, and I’m just going to tell you that all these are just pure fantasies? They are no more than wishes which is limiting in nature. If you’re not sure what it means, read my earlier article on “The Power of Emotion and Fantasy“. […]
